Below is a summary of the Finger to Nose Test used by officers in Boating Under the Influence cases. The instructions are lengthy and confusing if it is your first time ever hearing them. There are also alleged "clues" that the officer is looking for and most people do not think they have made any errors on the test.

The officer will then begin a sequence of instructions by varying which finger to use (left or right) to touch your nose.
There are 48 different boxes that an officer may check on hi field sobriety sheet to mark you for a "clue" on the test. These are the clues:
INSTRUCTIONS: on the Finger To Nose Test:
- Make a fist with both hands;
- Extend your index fingers;
- Turn your palms forward and remain in this position while I explain the test;
- When I say "begin" I want you to tilt your head back about a 45 degree angle and close your eyes;
- When I tell you to "begin", I want you to touch the tip of your nose with the tip of your index finger and immediately return it to you side;
- [Then the officer may explain what the "tip" of your finger is and what is the "side" of your finger];
- When I say "right" you must touch your right index finger to your nose;
- When I say "left" you must touch your left index finger to your nose.

- Person is unable to follow instructions;
- Person started at the wrong time (if you practice the test while listening to the instructions, the officer will mark that as a clue);
- Person did not close their eyes (if you open your eyes during the test, you may be marked for a clue);
- Person opened their eyes during the test (the same as number 3 above);
- Person did not tilt head back;
- Person moved their head during the test;
- Person used the wrong hand to touch their nose;
- Person used the wrong finger to touch their nose;
- Person "hesitated" while performing the test;
- Person hesitated on which hand to use while touching their nose;
- Person did not touch their nose with the tip of their finger;
- Person missed their nose with their finger;
- Person did not bring their hands back down to the lap after they finished the test.
