Speeding tickets
If you have been stopped for speeding in Georgia, you need to aggressively defend your speeding ticket. Speeding tickets can cause points to be assessed on your license which can result in a license suspension if you have 15 or more points in any 24 month period. See a complete list of points on your license for speeding in Georgia here: Points for Speeding
Car Insurance
One, if not the main reason to defend any speeding or other traffic ticket is the fact that your car insurance rates may be raised if your insurance company learns that you have had points assessed to your license. It is very important to remember that if you simply call a number on your ticket and pay a fine, you have in effect plead guilty to the exact ticket that you have been charged with and it will go on your driving history. Driver's License from another State
It is important to remember that certain traffic offenses may be reported to the issuing state and that state may institute whatever penalty that they would have imposed if the traffic offense had been committed in the home state. Most importantly: If you simply pay your ticket online, then you have plead guilty and more than likely have lost your right to fight your speeding ticket in court. Even if you have paid your ticket online, there is a Georgia statute that may allow your case to be re-opened if your attorney files a motion with the court. |
Point Reduction
Pursuant to O.C.G.A. 40-5-86, you may take a driver improvement class once every five years that will reduce your total points by 7.
